I've had the Barley Crusher for probably 7 years and run tons of grain through it. Lately its been having problems, it will stop crushing the grain about half way through forcing me to reverse my drill and restart milling.

Does anyone know of a fully adjustable gap, geardriven malt mill? The Scmidlings offer either gear driven OR adjustable. But their set gap is .045, which is a bit wide. I run my Barley Crusher at .035 which gives me the crush I want.

If so I suggest you do search here on "worn roller barley crusher" or just search "grain mill worn roller" and you'll find the threads are all related to the barley crusher... Your problem is a very common issue with the Barley crusher mills. You can send the mill back to take the roller replaced and it should only cost you shipping and handling...

There are lots of good grain mills out there. A few that will work with this project are: The Barley Crusher (7 15lb versions) Monster Mill. Captain Crush Grain Mill. Most grain mills come with a hand crank. Removing the crank arm exposes the shaft which usually fits into the chuck of a power drill.

The steam options requires a large pot of boiling water and a false bottom. Put the grains in a large grain bag and set it aside. Then bring the pot to a boil. Once you had a strong boil going, place the bag over the steam rising from it for about a minute and a half. Then pulled the bag out, stir it a bit and quickly mill it.

The optimal gap will be affected by the knurling specific to each mill, so a reliable "standard" probably can't exist. If one has a mill, it usually comes with a recommended gap, a good place to start. fwiw, the recommended gap on the infamous Barley Crusher is .039". Cheers!

On Friday Oct. 28 I visited the store and was able to compare the Cereal Killer and the Barley Crusher side by side. Both mills come with a crank handle, metal hopper and a base to sit on a bucket. When it comes to the actual roller mechanism a person would be hard pressed to see a real difference between the two.

Try tightening your gap, don't worry about how your crush looks relative to your old corona mill. I have used a barley crusher for about 4 years. I tightened mine up from the factory setting to about .032". It worked great and gave me great efficiency (8085%) for about three years and has been slowly wearing out over the last year or so ...

I think the Barley Crusher Grain Mill is still the best bang for the buck at, well at Northern Brewer anyways, about 10 bucks more than when I bought mine 2 years ago come July. It comes with everything pictured, unlike the expensive mills where everything comes separately. Here it is sittin atop my 5G Lowe's bucket, which seems to fit the base tighter than the orange Home Depot bucket.

Unlike the Corona Mill its actually meant for grain with a large hopper. It does the same thing as a Monster mill for 1/3 of the price. It lasts. I've had mine for 5 years and it works like new after 100's and 100's of pounds of grain, 25 pounds at a time. It only costs around 90 if you get it on sale.
