And one little known secret of these small mills is that when used for vertical milling with smaller end mills homemade leadscrew extensions can safely extend X travel by about 20%. That was a factory option on many of the Tom Senior mills.

Weldon invented the helical end mill, which tends to pull out of collets under heavy use, so they came up with the straightshankwithdriveflat holder system to combat that.

WEBApr 18, 2021 · I have the complete setup also, but since I also have a "real" horizontal mill, I have never used it. It probably "works", but I don't like the Benchmaster setup for horizontal. The spindle goes in the "ram clamps", and a fairly light, thin casting clamps on the spindle housing between the clamps to hold the overarm. Does not seem very stiff.

WEBFeb 22, 2003 · I have a little horizontal mill called an Industrolite that is for sale. Actually I have two, one is pristine and I'm keeping it. The other is rough around the edges but I think basically sound (ways OK, etc.) biggest defect is the gearbox for the power table feed is missing. It's a bit of a project that could become a nice servicable little mill.

WEBJun 12, 2013 · There is considerable difference in size. One has a 6 X 26 table, the other is 8 X 30. The difference between the two that really makes a difference is vertical clearance. Another import machine to look at is the Industrial Hobbies manual mill, which has a 9 1/2 X 39 1/2 table. A machine of considerable capability.

WEBNov 18, 2012 · Benchmaster mill has a drawbar for holding the arbors in place without falling out. The BM spindle probably does not have provision for the tang on a No. 2 Morse taper shank. So to use one of the adapters mentioned above, a person will have to cut off the tang and drill and tap for the thread needed for the draw bar.

Having to use the knee for Z movement is inconvenient for drilling or tapping but the spindle has maximum rigidity without a quill. WEBApr 15, 2014 · You remove the horizontal and put in the vert (easier said than done.) The motor mount is hinged so it provides belt tension by gravity in vert mode. you don't use the swivel in horizontal mode (at least mine doesn't.) The giant pulley would be good to slow the cutter speed, but doesn't do much for speed changes.

The Burke horizontal milling machine is in the same size/capacity class as the Benchmaster mill.
