A soaking pit for reheating steel is a rectangular refractorylined chamber (Figure 17)with one or more burners. The pit is provided with a movable cover of arched or suspended construction. To prevent gases from leaking around the cover, various methods of sealing have been developed; one of the latest effective means makes use of ceramic fibres.
